The quality of air depends on the rate at which pollutants are emitted into the atmosphere, combined with the ability of the atmosphere to disperse these pollutants.

Air pollutants come from many sources. Industrial sources (e.g. energy and manufacturing facilities) are considered point sources. Automobiles and homes are considered area sources.
