About the Sierra Club
It is our mission to develop a well-trained knowledgeable network of community leaders who are working to protect the integrity of our prairie ecosystems. We aim to do this by engaging and activating communities on issues of critical importance that will either provide solutions to or challenge obstacles in ensuring sustainable and healthy communities for future generations.
Current Education, Outreach Programs or Activities
Energy Solutions
Within the Prairie Chapter, the Energy Solutions program has focused on: efficiency programs in urban environments and development projects; transportation solutions; renewable energy promotion; and strategies for transitions from current sources of energy to a sustainable energy future.
School Pool
SchoolPool.ca is an online ride-matching system and resource tool designed to assist in the creation of carpools. Modeled after the successful Carpool.ca program, SchoolPool.ca will connect parents with other families in order to share commuting needs. Passenger transportation accounts for 1/3 of Canada’s total green house gases. Much of this is accounted by short trips taken within city boundaries. In partnership with Transport Canada, the Alberta Motor Association, the Sierra Club of Canada (Prairie Chapter), Carpool.ca and Sustainable Alberta, SchoolPool.ca will offer Alberta teachers, parents and students a new sustainable transportation alternatives and education.
Prairie Water Strategy
Addressing the impending water availability in the prairie region will require a prairie-wide management system that considers ecosystems needs, source protection, natural flows and equitable distribution between users. We work in coalition with regional specific water groups to inform, promote and research the role soft path approaches offer in meeting the need for sustainable prairie-wide management of shared water resources.
Environmental 911
There are times when anyone feels helpless in the face of the environmental damage we see every day. The issues are complex, there are many people involved, and it’s difficult to know where to start. That’s where Enviro 911 comes in. If you see, or hear of, an environmental issue that concerns you, dial the Enviro 911 hotline to start finding answers to your questions.
Based out of the Sierra Club of Canada – Prairie Chapter office, a team of volunteer researchers will be available to help you. Our volunteers come from a wide range of backgrounds that enable them to tackle the problem efficiently and effectively. They will get to the bottom of: Who is responsible? Is any one else working on the issue? What are the relevant laws? What can we do?
