Particulate matter and ozone implementation
This team was created in 2006 to oversee implementation of the CASA Particulate Matter (PM) and Ozone Management Framework.
That framework was developed by the 2000 – 2003 PM and Ozone Project Team (2000 – 2003). Alberta Environment is implementing the Framework in Alberta to meet commitments under the Canada-Wide Standards (CWS) for Particulate Matter and Ozone.

Progress to date
The team has recommended to the CASA Board of Directors that the framework review be delayed until the impacts of emerging government policies and initiatives are known and better understood.
Initiatives like the Comprehensive Air Management System, Land Use Framework, Clean Air Strategy, Industrial Heartland, Climate Change Action Plan, Cumulative Effects Management Framework, Ambient Monitoring Strategic Plan and others will all have an impact on air quality in Alberta.
History
CASA has a history of success in addressing issues related to particulate matter and ozone, key components of smog. Most areas of Alberta are below the numeric CWS (see diagram).
Although the CWS apply only to urban areas with populations over 100,000, the CASA Framework goes further and applies to the entire province.
